The Black Hills Chapter of the American Legion Riders
(ALR) is sponsored by The American Legion Post 164 of Spearfish, Department of South Dakota.
We are members of The American Legion, American Legion Auxiliary,
and Sons of the American Legion who share a common interest of riding motorcycles and serving veterans, active duty military
and their community. We are an association that promotes the aims and purposes of the American Legion.
We support those serving in uniform today
through participation in deployment or homecoming ceremonies; we show respect to veterans on their final journey,
escorts our fallen heroes, and support the families left behind. We also participate in community events and parades,
ceremonies, help veterans in our communities, support VA facilities and coordinate flag lines
and escorts for veterans' funerals upon request.
A primary fundraiser
for the American Legion Riders is the American Legion Legacy Scholarship Fund. The 2013 American Legion’s
annual Legacy Run conducted to benefit the children of post 9/11 fallen U.S. servicemembers raised more than $334,000 during
the ride, while donations during and on the floor of The American Legion’s national convention in Houston brought that
total to $764,000.
"As an unfortunate
consequence of Operation Iraqi Freedom and the global war on terror, many children of our active-duty military personnel are
now members of single-parent families. We are raising funds to ensure that higher education will be a reality for these families,
but we need your help. It is estimated that over 11,000 children
have lost a parent in the war overseas. That number continues to grow each day. The Legion is actively working to ensure that
all those children who want a post-secondary education will be provided one."
Since 2004, ninety-nine (99) scholarships were awarded.
